sustainability

At Dutjahn, our commitment extends beyond sustainability, to creating a regenerative system of sandalwood production in which people and biodiversity can thrive. This approach has been awarded with the United Nations Equator Prize for nature-based sustainable development, and Ecovadis Platinum.

Ethical to the core

From regenerating lands through the growth of sandalwood trees to ensuring equitable returns to Traditional Custodians, we carefully balance the social, economic and environmental impacts of our work. This is to preserve the integrity of the ethical sandalwood supply chain we’ve created, ensuring benefits to people and the planet for generations to come.

Our business is an equal partnership between Traditional Custodians and the world’s largest cultivators of Australian sandalwood. Together, we are united in our commitment to ethical business and a shared mission to ensure the future of the ancient Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) species.

We only use sandalwood from managed lands where harvesting is complemented by intensive replanting, and ecosystems are cared for to preserve biodiversity, fusing wood from renewable, cultivated forestry projects and managed biodiverse desert forests.

Through our ethical sandalwood supply chain we empower Indigenous sandalwood communities, improve soil health and carbon capture through cultivation, and explore processes to ensure circularity while reducing our water usage and carbon footprint. We collaborate to achieve more, and we hold ourselves to account through third party certifications and audits, always adopting a journey of learning and discovery.

In 2019 we were humbled to receive both the Sedex Best Collaborative Effort and the United Nations Equator Prize for our work, recognising our nature-based solutions to sustainable development and climate change.
