Is WA Wild Sandalwood at Risk?

Despite growing concern, research reveals how care, regeneration, and Aboriginal leadership can secure sandalwood’s future.

Western Australia’s sandalwood industry is at a critical juncture, shaped by government review, native title rights, and debate over whether the species is regenerating sufficiently to remain viable in the wild. The research finds that while natural regeneration has declined from historical levels, sandalwood can and does regenerate when browsing pressure is controlled, fire is managed, and seed planting is actively undertaken. Drawing on field evidence from Aboriginal‑managed rangelands, the paper concludes that a sustainable commercial industry and effective conservation outcomes are achievable under Aboriginal stewardship, supported by appropriate policy and management frameworks. Aboriginal people know how to care for their country and look after the species. With stewardship, sandalwood thrives.
